Samepage 4.0 is a major release that is mainly focused on upgrade of the underlying technology stack as well as performance enhancements that are specifically targeted towards large enterprise deployments of the product. There are a number of enhancements and bug-fixes.

Please note,
Samepage 4.0 is the new base-line version and users of previous versions of SamePage would need to upgrade to version 4.0 first before upgrading to future releases.

Technology Stack Change - The underlying technology stack for SamePage has been changed to take advantage of newer technologies (that are proven to be stable in enterprise deployments for sometime now). These changes would improve the overall performance as well as scalability of the product.
  • The default JVM has been upgraded from 1.4.2  to 1.5. This change has also been done keeping in mind the EOSL of J2SE1.4.2 by Sun Microsystems as of Oct 2008.
  • The bundled application server has been upgraded from Tomcat 4.1 to Tomcat 5.5. More information on Tomcat 5.5 can be found here.
  • The underlying transaction engine as well as caching framework has also been changed/improved  to take advantage of these newer technologies.
  • For fresh installations of SamePage, the versioning of content would be done using the database/filesystem instead of a separate versioning engine. This change will not affect existing installations of SamePage which will continue to use the versioning engine.
  • For Tomcat installations, the file-structure has been modified to consolidate all data related folders into a single folder called data. This is meant for better house-keeping.
Performance Enhancements -  A number of design/code changes have been introduced to improve performance for various product functions including the publishing process, login process, project listing screens, search engine indexing etc. Overall, users would find significantly better performance, especially in larger installs.

New Installer for Linux/Upgrades - With this release, we are introducing a new installer for upgrades that would automate the upgrade process and reduce the manual steps for  performing an upgrade. This installer will perform all the steps including database changes and will upgrade the SamePage installation from any older release (3.2 upwards) to the latest release.

Also, a new installer is available for fresh Tomcat-based installations on Linux/Unix which automates/streamlines a number of steps which were manual in the previous installer.

REST based Web Services - A number of REST-based Web services have now been made available for integration with portals and other enterprise applications. Please click here for more details .We will be continuously improving the number and type of Web Services available for integration.

Miscellaneous Enhancements - Users will notice a few UI changes and enhancements in the new 4.0 release.
  • A number of list screens including project list, search results etc now have pagination. This enhancement helps in terms of both usability and performance. Please note, users can control the number of items displayed at a time by setting their Preferences.
  • The session time-out will be more apparent. The system will throw a screen saying you have been timed out and force you to login. This will avoid a potential situation where you continue to edit the page after getting timed out.
  • The project listing in the various pop-up screens for Insert Link, Move Page etc now provides a filter to choose from Favorite Projects, My Projects etc. The option would always default to the Project filter specified in the user's preference.
  • A new enhancement provides the option for administrators to limit the size of attachments uploaded by users. This is available in both On-Demand as well as On-Premise instances of SamePage.
  • RSS feeds for external consumption are now available for Support tickets and Forum threads.
  • A small enhancement has been introduced in the Math editor, allowing the latex code to be modified any number of times before inserting the equation as an image into the page.
  • A new option (system parameter) is available for administrators of On-Premise instances to completely remove the navigation bar for all users by default. This would make sense where the vast majority of users are read-only and you do not want to over-whelm users with all the options provided in the navigation bar. Users can still navigate and comment using crumbs and links. However, end users will always have the option to enable the navigation bar for themselves through their Preferences if they want to use all functions.
  • The Analytics at System/Domain level has been enhanced to provide a summary and detailed report on the most Active projects in that instance/domain for a given time period.
  • The  Hierarchy view of the project has been enhanced to provide a small paper-clip icon against those pages with attachments. A mouse-over the paper-clip icon tells you the number of attachments on that page and clicking on the icon takes you directly to the attachment tab of that page.
  • The ability to insert content from a template which was available only at the time of page creation, is now available also during edits. Consequently, templates can now be used to fill content into project home pages also.
New Plugins - A couple of new out-of-the-box plugins are available with this release.
  • Database Plugin - The new database plugin allows you to pull and display data from a database based on a query parameter (only Oracle DB supported). More info here.
  • Chart Plugin (Beta) - The chart plugin allows you automatically create and insert charts like pie chart, bar chart etc based on data provided directly as a plugin parameter or the output of a DB query (only Oracle DB supported). More info here.
Bug-Fixes - A number of bugs reported by customers and our own QA team have been fixed in this release. Some of the important bug-fixes included in this release are :
  • Pages locked by users with dots in their user -ids can now be unlocked by admins.
  • Issue with Page permissions for Groups not working for certain combinations has been fixed.
  • Pages with slash in the title can now be searched. Certain issues reported for Advanced Search have also been fixed.
  • Error message displayed when inactive users try to login is more clear.
  • Certain Cross-side Scripting vulnerabilities reported by customers have been fixed.
  • Bug in the Transfer Ownership function that lead to the user disappearing from the Project Admin screen has been fixed.
